Dr. Obot Akpan Ibanga joined the services of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) in 2013 as Administrative Assistant, re-designated to Laboratory Technologist in 2018 and to Lecturer II in 2020. He holds a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) in Environment and Development (2021), Master of Science (M.Sc) in Geographic Information System (2011) and Bachelor of Science (B.Sc) in Geography & Regional Planning, (2002) all from the University of Uyo, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. He also holds a World Meteorological Organisation (WMO)-Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NiMet) Basic Meteorological Observation (Class IV) Certificate (2012) from the Meteorological Research and Training Institute, Oshodi, Lagos State.
Dr. Obot’s official responsibilities in UNIBEN include teaching, research and community services. He was the geographic information system (GIS) expert in charge of the University of Benin, Ugbowo Campus Guide Map Project (2022); Assistant Fieldwork Coordinator for GEO311 (Field Studies in Geography) in 2020/2021 Academic; Assistant Fieldwork Coordinator for GEO323 (Geography Field work Techniques (Practical) in 2020/2021 Academic Session; Assistant Fieldwork Coordinator for GEO123 (Local Field Studies) in 2019/2020 Academic Session; Departmental Transcript Officer in 2019/2020 Academic Session; and facilitated the commencement weather/climate observation in the Departmental Meteorological Station in 2009.
He was also the Sector Expert to Edo State Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning for the formulation of Edo State 30-years Agriculture and Rural Development Strategic Plan (Edo in 2050) in 2021; and GIS Sub-Consultant to Edo State World Bank Assisted Nigeria Erosion & Watershed Management Project (EDO-NEWMAP) in 15 Gully Erosion and Flood Control Sites namely: Ibore, Iguosa, Ekenwan Road, Queen Ede, Oshobugie, Edo College, Emu, Ambrose Alli Universiy, Ekpoma, Ewu, Fugar-Aghenebode Road, Gapiona, Urora, Ogiso/Osunde, Igbei and Ugboha.
Dr. Obot is passionate of deploying emerging technologies including GIS and remote sensing in assessment and mapping of environment and development change issues as well as indicators responsible for human, societal and ecological vulnerabilities at various spatial scales. He strives to collaborate with world-classed researchers with multi-disciplinary research prowess to give expansive and global perspectives of complex biophysical and socio-economic challenges.
Dr. Obot is a Co-Investigator and founder, Environment & Development Research Group (EVDRG) in the Department of Geography & Regional Planning, University of Benin. The EVDRG is among the few research groups that won 18 Million Naira Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) National Research Fund (NRF) Grant under the Cross-Cutting (CC) Research Category (2020/2021) Grant Cycle; and 1.9 Million Naira TETFund Institution Based Research Grant (IBR) 2023 Grant Cycle. He has also earned several other academic awards, grants and
honours including the Joint World Stroke Organisation (WSO)/European Stroke Organisation (ESO) Travel Grant for Early Career Researchers to a conference in Vienna, Austria (2020); European Stroke Organisation (ESO) Travel Grant for Early Career Researchers to a conference in Milan, Italy (2019); International Federation for IT and Travel & Tourism (IFITT) ICT4D Scholarship Recipient (2018); National Association of Akwa Ibom State Students (NAKISS) UNIBEN Chapter’s award of honour for meritorious services in the development of intellects among the Akwa Ibom Youth (2014); and NYSC State Director’s award on honesty, accountability, initiative, drive and integrity (2002).
Dr. Obot is a member of several professional Organisations including the Association of American Geographers (AAG), International Association of Great Lake Research (IAGLR), United States of America/Canada; American Society of Agronomy (ASA), Crop Science Society of America (CSSA) and Soil Science Society of America (SSSA), Association of Nigerian Geographers (ANG) and Nigeria Meteorological Society (NMS) among others. His extracurricular activities include: preaching, map making, reading, listening to gospel music, sports and travelling.
